In these cases, the Toolpath can be split into sections and output as several Toolpaths. However, some Laser machines have a Focal Length (the section of the laser that actually does the machining) that is stationary, requiring the job to be moved after travelling a certain distance in Z. The next area of the Assistant page is for defining Toolpath Section(s): Generally, this is set to Output One Toolpath. The Reverse Tool Slice Order checkbox allows the user to machine the bottom slice first, resulting in a much smoother but less well-defined result, since the laser runs over the same area with every slice. Set the start height to 0, slice thickness to 0.1 and press apply.

Clicking the Apply button will use these values to update the Number of Slices (in this case 35). Slice Thickness defaults to 0.1mm, but should be set according to the stepdown of the particular laser machine, depending on its speed, power, and the hardness of the material being cut.

There are three ways ArtCAM Pro can currently be used with Laser Machines. We cannot do 2D Laser Machining or Laser Marking raster cutting inside vector boundaries. ArtCAM Pro can ONLY be used for 3D Laser machining. Experimenting will help determine the correct stepdown for the laser. The depth of the laser cut depends on the machine tool and power output. 3D Laser Machining works the same way as conventional machining, apart from a laser in used instead of a machine tool.
